  Twenty-seven of the Commonwealth's 53 members are Small Island Developing States (SIDS). They have populations of less than 1.5 million and are characterised by their vulnerability in the areas of environmental disaster, limited human resources, economic resources and security. It is, therefore, a major challenge to assist these countries to identify sectors with growth potential, i.e. sectors where they can be competitive.

  The country's overall economic performance has responded positively to the reforms. While maintaining macroeconomic stability, Tanzania has been able to achieve an annual average growth of over 5% between 1996-2003 and an estimated 6.3% in 2004. This represents an extraordinary performance when compared to the economic regression during 1970s and early 1980s and also in comparison to other countries in the region.

  Tanzania will receive a non-repayable financial grant of $18 million from Switzerland for its Poverty Reduction Budget Support (PRBS). According to the agreement, the funds will be used by the government in the implementation of the poverty reduction strategy and in the continuation of the economic and structural reform process.

  Swiss co-operation with Tanzania will have a clear focus on poverty reduction in the years 2004 to 2010. The new Country Programme builds on the experiences and strengths of the Swiss Programme 1999-2003, and takes into account a wide range of consultations and evaluations. The Tanzanian political context is comparatively stable, and there are encouraging signs as far as the macro-economic key indicators are concerned.

- The African Development Foundation (ADF) is providing financial assistance to local companies, which have shown that they are capable of doing business and employing many people in order to fight poverty. For the past two years the foundation has provided over 1.6bn/- to development projects in Tanzania.

- The Tanzania Women Action Fighters against HIV/Aids (TWAFAHA) has called on donors funding the fight against the scourge to extend financial support to NGOs operating at grassroots levels. TWAFAHA chairperson Salome Kaiza made the call at a seminar that analysed the national AIDS policy and sensitisation of local government authorities of Ubungo Ward in the fight against the disease.

315. ILO to give training to women entrepreneurs

  ILO plans to give initial and advanced training to almost 2,000 women on Business Development. The training will be conducted in partnership with the Development Cooperation Ireland (DCI). The training will also target people with disabilities.
