The sixth meeting of the GSB Coordinating Group was held at Tanzania Global Development Learning Center (DLC) to discuss specific GSB projects in the pipeline as well as to discuss the way forward for the projects. The attached agenda was
adopted to guide the meeting, which was attended by 20 members (see attached list of attendees), including members from Erics son Sweden and Tetra Pak who participated through videoconference from Stockholm.

Without a minimum of reliable and efficient access to locations of basic social and economic activities, rural life stagnates and local development prospects remain limited. Providing and maintaining a minimum level of access, referred to in this paper as basic access, is therefore a necessary element of any rural development strategy.

Alleviating poverty requires improved access to social and economic facilities.   Africa has the lowest water supply and sanitation coverage of any region in the world. More than 1 in 3 Africans residing in urban areas currently lack access to adequate services and facilities. In the year 2000, coverage levels for water supply and sanitation were 62 & 60 percent respectively. Africa is also urbanizing faster than any other region. Between 1990 and 2025, the total urban population is expected to grow from 300 to 700 million; 1 and by 2020, it is expected that over 50 percent of the population in African countries will reside in urban areas.
