  This paper examines the transformation of Tanzanias mining sector throughout the past several decades. Author Tundu Lissu analyzes the impacts on society resulting from World Bank-led and NEPAD-supported macroeconomic policy changes that divert the focus from artisanal mining to that of large-scale development dominated by foreign investment. Issues of human rights abuses, unemployment, land tenure conflicts and corruption are said to have accompanied this change in focus. This means people who are willing and ready to get jobs, are actively seeking for them, but not finding them. This large group of people includes both skilled and unskilled labour in both rural and urban areas but does not include those who are categorized as unemployable.

To assess the likely trajectory of poverty rates over the course of the period, changes in poverty are simulated using unit-record HBS data and national accounts growth rates under varying assumptions for growth rates and inequality changes.

  The economic growth of Mtwara Region has increased by 47.5 per cent a year between 1995 and this year, the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Isidore Leka Shirima, has said. This translates into income ranging from 82.136bn/- in 1995 to 389.768bn/- or an increase of 475 per cent,The contribution of the region to the national economy had also increased from 2.94 ten years ago to 3.97 per cent this year.
