  As part of the continental body on world development, the African Union wants all debts cancelled by 2007. This article by Constantine Mashauri has highlights from the meeting held in Kampala, Uganda which ended on 11th August 2005. The aim of the cancellation is to enable African countries tame poverty by 2015 as stipulated in the millennium development goals initiative.

  This is an evaluation report to examine the extent of Dutch aid interventions in development activities towards poverty reduction. This particular research was conducted in Mbulu and Songea where the Netherlands had long term financial contributions to District Rural Development Programmes. The research showed that poverty had not lessened as enabling policies at the national level offered insufficient basis at the district level to develop independently.

  Tanzania is implementing a full PRSP, and in addition, it is developing a national poverty monitoring system, PMS, to monitor the impact of PRSP. This study looks at areas/ possibilities to further harmonize the poverty monitoring efforts. The study also contains recommendations based on some suggested draft monitoring arrangements presented in this paper.

  The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched the Nile Transboundary Micro Grants programme in Tanzania to support community driven interventions that address transboundary environmental challenges and contribute towards poverty reduction. The programme, launched in Mwanza City, is an activity within the community level land, forest and water conservation component of (NTEAP).
 
645. Free Trade: a dead end for underdeveloped economies

  International Institutions of finance and trade support that free trade is a means of achieving economic development in the developing countries. Their argument is that free trade will enable countries to realize their comparative advantages which will lead to higher economic growth and development. This paper however, argues differently that the theory of comparative advantage is a model of substitution effect, meaning it is another version of static efficiency. The paper argues that in order to achieve economic development, the poor countries need freedom to implement strategies in the same manner as the now industrial countries did.
