646. Economic Liberilization and Smallholder Productivitiy in Tanzania

  Smallholder farmers are the main producers of crops Tanzania. In the mid 1980’s, Tanzania adopted a programme for economic liberalization for the entire economy, agriculture included. It was thought this would result in an increase of yields but this was not the case. This paper analyzes some failures related to this.

  The paper identifies various ICT roles in poverty sectors such as Employment opportunities in increasing access to market information and lowering transaction costs; Education and Health programs; Monitoring of food security (weather, droughts) and ICT in Governance. In all of these, ICTs offer tools and application but not solutions. By providing cheap and efficient tools for the exchange of information, ideas and knowledge, ICTs can become an enabling tool for socio-economic development.

  A network linking the railway lines and some major lake ports in Burundi, Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia is being mooted by United Nations experts to promote trade and regional integration. The proposed South Corridor Great Lakes Railway Project will entail construction of 900km of new railway line to provide seamless transportation across the Great Lakes Region for goods and people.

  The World Bank has so far brought into the country about USD1.4bn in support of over 27 projects ranging from water supply and sanitation systems to trade and transportation. World Bank Country Director Judy O’Connor disclosed this at the opening of Urban Transport Planning and Reforms Training in Sub Saharan Africa.
